Outlook can connect to your cPanel mailbox using IMAP and SMTP. IMAP is recommended because it keeps your emails synchronised across multiple devices, including webmail, phone and desktop.
Before you start
You will need your full email address, mailbox password and mail server details. These are usually available from cPanel under Email Accounts, then Connect Devices.
Recommended settings
- Account type: IMAP
- Incoming server: mail.yourdomain.com or your server hostname
- Incoming port: 993
- Incoming encryption: SSL/TLS
- Outgoing server: mail.yourdomain.com or your server hostname
- Outgoing port: 465 or 587
- Outgoing encryption: SSL/TLS or STARTTLS
- Username: your full email address
Common Outlook problems
- Outlook repeatedly asks for the password.
- Outgoing mail fails due to SMTP authentication.
- The wrong port is selected.
- The username is entered without the domain.
- Antivirus or local security software interferes with mail connections.
Best practice
Where possible, avoid POP3 unless you specifically want messages downloaded to one device. For most users, IMAP is safer and easier because mail stays synchronised.
