DNS propagation is the delay between changing a DNS record and that change being seen everywhere on the internet. It is one of the most misunderstood parts of hosting and migration work.
Why propagation happens
DNS records are cached by internet providers, devices, browsers and DNS resolvers. When a record changes, some systems see the new value quickly while others keep using the old cached value until it expires.
Common symptoms
- You see the new website but someone else sees the old one.
- Email works for some senders but not others.
- SSL does not issue immediately after DNS changes.
- Cloudflare shows different behaviour depending on location.
How long does it take?
Some changes are visible within minutes. Others can take several hours, and in some cases up to 24–48 hours depending on TTL values and caching.
Best practice before migration
Before moving a live website or email service, TTL values can sometimes be lowered in advance to reduce cutover delays. This needs to be done before the actual change, not after.
