PHP is the programming language used by WordPress and many other web applications. Different applications require different PHP versions. Using an old PHP version can create security risks, while using a version that is too new can break older code.
Why PHP versions matter
- Newer PHP versions are usually faster.
- Older PHP versions may no longer receive security updates.
- Some plugins or themes may not support the newest versions.

Changing PHP version
Depending on the server setup, PHP version can usually be changed from MultiPHP Manager, Select PHP Version or a similar cPanel tool.
Before changing PHP
- Take a backup.
- Check your application requirements.
- Change the version.
- Test the website carefully.
- Review error logs if anything breaks.
Security note
Running unsupported PHP versions long-term is not recommended. If a website only works on very old PHP, it should be updated, repaired or rebuilt.
