- Check reviews and support history.
- Avoid plugins from unknown sources.
- Do not install multiple plugins that do the same job.
- Take a backup before installing plugins on important sites.
Security risk
Outdated or abandoned plugins are a common route for malware. If a plugin is no longer maintained, replace it with an actively supported alternative.
Performance risk
Each plugin can add database queries, scripts, styles and background tasks. A site with too many plugins may become slow or unstable even if each plugin seems small.
